K'nex is a relative new brand of construction toys. It was founded in 1993 by the brothers Joel and Bob Glickman. The concept was a system based on only rods and connectors. Later wheels and pulleys were added to give the builder more flexibility. At first, models with moving parts had a handcrank to get it moving, but later motors and gears made it possible for the models to move on their own.
In 2001, K'nex started to make brand construction, like LEGO did. K'nex started to sell kits with the BattleTech/MechWarrior and the OCC (Orange County Chopper) label. Today K'nex has a Sesame Street line.
